Afghanistan - Mirjam Kluka
In partnership with UNICEF Switzerland
In October 2025, Swiss photographer Mirjam Kluka traveledto Afghanistan with UNICEF and UNICEF Ambassador Bastian Baker —a country that has been plagued by conflict, poverty, and natural disasters for decades. Children are hit hardest by this reality: Many are malnourished, lack access to education, and grow up in an environment marked by violence, child labor, and a lack of rights. Girls are particularly affected.
And yet Kluka’s work depicts not only suffering, but also hope. Her photographs tell the stories of dedicated teachers, courageous families, and children who refuse to give up despite the most adverse circumstances. Despite the gravity of the situation, she found Afghanistan to be one of the most hospitable and impressive countries she has ever visited.
Mirjam Kluka (born 1981 in Aarau) has been working as a freelance photographer in Zurich and internationally for over 25 years. With great empathy and intimacy, she turns her gaze to what moves her most: people. Her images are born of trust, calm, and presence—and leave room for dignity, beauty, and humanity, even where they seem most vulnerable.
