Alesha Gibson and Mike Lantis
Corrections officers
Parnall Correctional Facility, Jackson, Michigan
Mike: I see these prisoners and try to relate to them. And if they start to talk about their family, there’s a lot of trauma that’s going on in their living rooms, in their lives. Some of them don’t even know who their dad is for the most part. So that deep destabilization, then they don’t have that instillation of ethics or values, norms, to even fear what the law consequences can give them. A lot of them come here and there’s no emotion to it at all. Alesha: We have offenders that go home and they come back and they go home and they come back. A lot of them are not successful like we would like for them to be, but they have these new programs that help them get jobs.
