Photo Editing To Go

In contrast to classic travel photography, where the focus is on perfect light and particularly photogenic subjects, vacation photography is about capturing the moment as it is - regardless of the weather, light or time of day. Often there is no time for ideal conditions, but the image is created exactly when you are there. The workshop teaches you in a practical way how to take impressive pictures with little effort and without any previous knowledge. Step by step, you will learn how to take impressive photos even under difficult conditions - ideal memories for photo books or calendars that will give pleasure and leave an impression.

Learning objectives

Developing a personal attitude to image editing: Should a photo be post-processed - or not? The workshop invites you to make this creative decision consciously. After an inspiring input from the well-known photographer Peter Eastway (video recording), the advantages and disadvantages of digital post-processing will be discussed together. Practical tips and tools for image processing: The workshop will provide helpful input and introduce two user-friendly smartphone apps: the free app Snapseed and the paid app PS Express. Simple techniques will be used to show how photos can be professionally edited - which can of course also be used with other apps. Actively implementing creative image design: Practical examples are used to demonstrate various creative options for image design, such as the use of filters. Using an app installed on their own smartphone or tablet, participants can practise post-processing directly. The results are then (optionally) discussed and reflected on in the group.

Instructor

Isabelle Sommer

As a geographer and psychologist with a passion for photography, Isabelle Sommer has been interested in the interplay between technology and creativity since her youth. In her minor subject "Technical and Scientific Photography" at ETH Zurich, she was taught the basics of precise image composition and darkroom development. The switch to digital photography in the early 2000s opened up new freedoms and room for creative experimentation. Intuitive smartphone apps, including the possibility of creating double exposures, gave rise to an individual, expressive visual language. Some works were shown at photoSchweiz 2025 and demonstrate how digital post-processing can lead to convincing results even under difficult shooting conditions.
